ProAsthma: Probiotic supplement with bacteria targeting individuals with asthma

Our project aims to investigate the correlation between an altered gut microbiome and the immune system in order to develop a solution and product to help people with asthma. We began by analysing how dysbiosis in the gut microbiome is caused by factors in modern society and how its interaction with the lungs and immune system can increase the risk of allergies and asthma. To support our analysis, we interviewed experts. We also studied the scientific literature behind probiotic supplementation and found that it may have the potential to improve conditions in people with food allergies, hay fever and asthma. However, the evidence for other types of allergies remains unclear. Additionally, we conducted a systematic scientific review and identified 16 specific bacterial genera that are less abundant in people with asthma compared to control subjects. Building on the hypothesis that the bacteria identified from the review could restore gut microbiome homeostasis in people with asthma, we focused on developing a product that can alleviate the symptoms of allergies and asthma. The quality of the 16 specific bacterial genera was assessed, resulting in the inclusion of 7 particular species in our product, based on a security principle. After thorough research, we created ProAsthma (an abbreviation for probiotics and asthma), a probiotic supplement specifically designed for individuals with asthma. We believe that ProAsthma has the potential to be a safe product with a measurable effect. Moreover, ProAsthma can be manufactured, marketed and sold on a large scale to people with asthma and possibly other inflammatory diseases.
