Usage of “Heat Transfer” and “Mass Loss” within Mask Quality Control Tests

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-Co V-2 virus has resulted in the loss of more than 2.5 million lives, and the number of cases continues to increase day by day on a global level. In order to avoid the spread of the virus, social distancing, self hygiene and the usage of face masks is urged. We all have a personal and social responsibility to enforce and maintain these precautions. It is especially important to adopt the constant use of masks in environments with high risk of contamination. However, within the industry, some masks are put up for sale without being scientifically tested. In this research, it was tried to prevent the introduction and sale of products that are not suitable for breathing and/or are permeable. Based on the literature review, no study was found examining the heat transfer and mass loss with the aim of testing the permeability of masks and thus, in addition to the existing mask efficiency tests, alternative methods that require less budget and time were presented. Experiments were carried out in the most realistic ambient conditions possible. Thanks to these experiments, the permeability of different types of face masks have been tested and compared, therefore, alternative methods to standard tests have been offered. As a result, the permeability and, accordingly, the breathability of the masks were tested in a shorter time period and with less cost. As a result of the experiments, consistent results to available tests were obtained and it was seen that professional and medical masks were the least suitable for breathing. For this reason, the importance of the heat transfer and mass loss parameters we tested, has been proven.
